THE CONQUEST
Bourbon. Beer. Rock. That’s what we do at Idle Hands Bar and one of our signature events is pairing Rock and Roll music with Beer and Food. Whether it’s our annual Beastie Boys NY Beer Pairing (Put July 16, 2014 in your calendar now) or past Burger Week events featuring Burger and Beer pairings with Iron Maiden or Guns N Roses, we really think it’s fun to drink Beer and eat while listening to good tunes. Seeing that everyone we have ever done has sold out, it seems you do too. When it came to planning for our annual NY Burger Week Burger and Beer pairing I racked my brain trying to think of which band would be perfect to do this with. Upon some investigation I learned that this week was the anniversary of AC/DC recording Back In Black at Electric Lady studios in NYC. When I realized we could call the event “Back In Black Angus,” the decision was made.

  • 1 order of tater tots
  • 5 tastes of beer from breweries
  • 1 shot of whiskey
  • Paired to all 10 tracks from Back In Black by AC/DC

The 2014 Burger Week in NY returns to Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B) on May 6th with another installment of their rock ‘n’ roll burger and beer pairing dinners. The event is called the “AC/DC Back In Black Angus Burger and Beer Pairing.” The menu will feature Burgers and beers “expertly paired” with each track on AC/DC’s Back in Black album by The Burger Week founder, Rev Ciancio. The album, originally released in 1980, has gone on to become the 4th highest selling album of all time.

On the anniversary of its recording in New York at Electric Lady Studios, attendees will enjoy a selection of off-menu mini-burgers created by Chef Dennis Hatzinger, each themed with a different song on the album. All Burgers will be made using Burger Maker’s Fresh Certified Angus Beef USDA Prime. FYI – Less than 1% of beef is considered CAB® USDA Prime worthy, so get ready for the good stuff. Burgers will be served with a series of craft beers from Bell’s Brewery, Two Brothers, 21st Amendment and Singlecut Beersmiths. The dinner will also include an order of Tater Tots & a shot of Whiskey.

THE BURGERS & BEERS
When I asked Chef Dennis if he could handle this event, he practically laughed at me. That meant he was up for the challenge. When he sent me the menu (see below), my eyes practically popped out of my head. Dennis not only was going to make it happen, he was going to own it. The way the event works, we hit play on the album and as each song comes blaring through the speakers, you get served the item paired with that song. It is expected that you keep pace with the servings. Meaning if the song is only 3 minutes, we expect you to drink your Beer / eat your Burger in 3 minutes. It’s super fast paced, really loud and a lot of fun.

Here are the pairing notes:

Thank you for coming to Idle Hands tonight for a unique version of our weekly beer tasting event. As part of our annual NY Burger Week event, we celebrate the recording of AC/DC’s “Back In Black” album with a special burger and beer pairing. All 10 songs on the record will be paired with a Burger, Beer, Whiskey or Tater Tots. All the meat featured in the burgers tonight is fresh ground Certified Angus Beef USDA Prime from Burger Maker. Only 1% of the cattle in America qualify as CAB USDA Prime. It has strong and intense all natural beef flavors and we thought it was the only meat that could match the intensity of rock and roll we’ll be enjoying tonight.

Man oh man. This is a really, really, really tough event to make happen. 10 courses in 49 minutes is not only hard to serve, it’s hard to eat / drink!! It took a team of 4 of us just to serve 20 people! But honestly, the mayhem and chaos is all worth it because of how much fun it is to produce it.

Thanks. I mean really, that’s the one word I want to get across here. Thanks. To everyone who bought a ticket and came to the party, thank you. I don’t have to say “I hope you had a good time” because I know you did, especially the group of ladies who decided to sit through the second seating just because they wanted to listen to more AC/DC. Every single person that came was super nice and a lot of fun to serve. Thanks goes to Sean from Two Brothers, Nick & Brian from Singlecut, Susanne from 21st Amendment, Zalika from Manhattan Distributors, Matt from Union Distributors and Yvon from Bell’s Brewing. Each one of these people not only showed up to the event day of to pour you their Beer and talk about it but they also made sure we were able to get the special Beers we poured during the tasting. Only 14 kegs of Two Brothers Dog Days came into NYC, only 1 keg of Singlecut Bon TNTPA was available, only 40 cases of Bell’s Black Note came into the state of NY. You guys were treated to some very special, small batch and unique Craft Beers. Thank you to Chef Dennis, Chris P & Chris T from Idle Hands Bar. It’s a pleasure to work with you guys and I appreciate how dedicated you were to making this a smooth and fun event. To Dennis, man, it’s been a pleasure working with you for the last year. Your Food is excellent and your dedication to cooking perfect Hamburgers is like no other. You took the Food at Idle Hands to another level and I have been extremely proud of the Burgers we’ve served, especially on this, your final night at the bar. To Rob and Marc, my partners at Idle Hands Bar, you guys are way more than  just that to me and I’m super proud of what we are able to do there. This event was super fun and I appreciate you letting me get away with putting us in legal jeopardy. Ha ha ha

THE CONQUEST
Anyone can push boundaries especially when it comes to cooking and creating recipes. It’s really not that hard to take a Burger and “dress it up” by dipping it into some weird sauce or layering it with 74 different random items. That’s just like reaching into the Lego bucket and building something with whatever you grab. Pouring that bucket onto the floor, analyzing the available bricks and coming up with a plan to build a 4 turret castle complete with moat, portcullis and a stable for the ponies, well that takes an understanding of the medium, planning and the ability to create. The latter of the 2 Lego builders is how I would describe Chef’s Keizo Shimamoto and Jeffrey Maslanka.

Jeff, the Chef and founder of Black Shack on Lexington has a simple yet tasty menu of Burgers on his menu including Burgers that have Garlic Creamed Spinach, Handmade Mozzarella, Horseradish Sauce as well as all the regular fixins. One of the most popular items though is the Black Shack Western Burger made with Crispy Onions, Pickles & BBQ Sauce. It was this Burger that helped to inspire a NY Burger Week event.

I was talking to Keizo Shimamoto, Ramen whiz kid and creator of the Food sensation, the Ramen Burger, about working together for Burger Week. In that conversation he mentioned that one of his favorite Burgers in NYC was The Black Shack. That’s when the Burger light bulb went off.

  • 1 off-menu Ramen Burger style Burger designed by Chef Jeff Maslanka
  • 1 Boozy Milk Shake
  • 1 Asian-American style side item
  • **All items split between 2 people**

The Burger Week in New York kicks off May 1 at The Black Shack (320 Lexington Ave) with a unique burger collaboration. Chef Jeffrey Maslanka brings off-menu burgers to the Burger Week, this time with Ramen Burger creator Keizo Shimamoto. Chef Jeff was the creative force behind the 2013 NY Burger Week off-menu Burger brunch at 67 Burger. For 2014, he and Shimamoto will work together to re-imagine each other’s Burger. Keizo has re-designed Jeff’s Western Burger – and it will be served along with Jeff’s take on the Ramen Burger. The dinner, limited to only 40 seats, will also feature a Black Shack off-menu Asian-themed side and a beer milk shake.

THE BURGERS:
When I tell you that these guys busted their tailbones re-creating each other’s Burgers, I’m not exaggerating in the least bit. The two of them granted me a first row seat to the process. I was kept on copy for nearly every single email and text message between Jeff and Keizo as they went back and forth with ideas, recipes, photos and requests. They even invited me and Brad from BurgerWeekly to come taste test the Burgers. It was an amazing process to watch and be a part of. It was no surprise then on the day of when it was time to devour the meal that it was amazing. That word gets thrown around a lot but if you asked any of the 40 people in attendance, including the crew from national Japanese television channel, NHK, they would agree.

  • Appetizer – Sloppy Joe-za Goyza

NY_The_Burger_Week_NYC_2014_Black_Shack_Eastern_Meets_Western_Kezio_Maslanka_050114_4016

The Sloppy Joe-za appetizer, an Asian inspired Gyoza stuffed with, you guessed it, Sloppy Joe was absolutely incredible as were the other apps served especially the Kinpira Gobo created by Keizo’s wife Junko.

NY_The_Burger_Week_NYC_2014_Black_Shack_Eastern_Meets_Western_Kezio_Maslanka_050114_4034

Keizo’s Burger, or as he called it the night of the event, “The Red Shack,” was a true culinary adventure. Normally I would look at a Burger with so many toppings and have a tendency to scoff. Once it becomes a 5 course meal between Buns, is it truly even a Burger? The answer doesn’t matter because it was AMAZING. Every flavor complimented each other perfectly while paying tribute to both Eastern and Western flavors. All of it accented the fresh Certified Angus Beef Steakburger from Burger Maker which even at a 4 oz size, was cooked to a perfect medium rare.

  • Jeff’s – Ramen Spaghetti and Meatball Burger with Sunday Gravy, handmade Mozzarella, Basil and Caramelized Onions.

NY_The_Burger_Week_NYC_2014_Black_Shack_Eastern_Meets_Western_Kezio_Maslanka_050114_4062

Jeff knocked this one out of the stadium. Again, not much of a surprise to me seeing as he did the same thing at the 67 Burger Off-Menu Burger Brunch for the 2013 NY Burger Week. The Ramen Spaghetti and Meatball Burger was just mouth defying. Using Keizo’s signature fresh Ramen Buns, Jeff basically took the dinner that was served in my family’s house every Sunday night and made it into a Burger. All the flavors in this were very pronounced and every bite, much like Keizo’s Red Shack, was a total flavor bomb. As one of the attendees pointed out that night, Jeff definitely earned some Paisano stripes with this one!

This event wasn’t about Burgers, this was Keizo’s and Jeff’s love letter to Food.

Thank you to everyone who attended and went on this culinary adventure with me. I hope you had as much fun as I did, immensely enjoyed the incredible Food prepared by Jeff and Keizo. To Jeff, Keizo, Ed, Daphne, Junko and especially the staff of Black Shack Burger, you are awesome. That was a very difficult event to pull off, with a lot of crazy parts, and all coming out of a very small kitchen. You crushed it. It’s a true honor to work with all of you. I can’t believe the NY Burger Week made it onto Japanese Television. Thank you to the friendly and excited staff of NHK for supporting our Burgeriffic habits. Click here to see the news piece.

THANK YOUS
First and foremost, if you attended any event whether as a fan, friend or working on it, thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you and THANK YOU. I did this for you. Granted there were some tasty side benefits but by being a part of NY Burger Week, you help show the rest of the world that we love our Burgers. I tip my hat and bow to you in honor.

In order of appearance, thank you to each of you.

My wife and talented novelist, Cara Lynn Shultz. You make my every day better and if Burgers ceased to exist today, my life would go on because I would still be able to share it with you.

Taste What You See On the Screen at the Food Film Festival in NYC, Chicago and now Charleston, SC. The people that put on this festival are some of the nicest, most fun and passionate people I have met in the hospitality business. I love being a part of your family and appreciate your support of NY Burger Week. George Motz, Seth Unger and Nicole Bergman – I love you. Your support of good food & good times makes life worth working for.

Jarlsberg Cheese rules, much like the people that represent it. There’s a reason you are successful and that’s because you realize Cheese is about life, it’s about community and it’s about sharing. Thank you for sharing with NY Burger Week. Ronnie, Aja & Casey, you are three hardest working people in the biz.

Jamie Schweid! I want your job. You wake up every day and get to talk about Hamburgers and not just any Hamburgers. Burger Maker Beef is some of the best in the business and I am honored to be able to represent your delicious product. Without you, there is no NY Burger Week. Here’s to Boston, Philly, Chicago and beyond.

Marc and Rob, my partners at Idle Hands Bar, thank you not just for a super fun kick off event but helping to make a childhood dream come true. To Dan & That Burger, all the best of luck buddy. I am psyched that we were able to help you take your business to all new levels. Don’t forget the little people when you have 600 That Burger locations along the Eastern Seaboard. Don’t forget, you owe us a Bourbon Ketchup release party. To Ally from Green Flash, Billy from Ballast Point & Dan from Stone Brewing Co, that awesome. Let’s do it again.

Jessica from Heaven Hill, I am psyched we got to work together. You are Bourbon’s best rep in the big city. Times Square is a crazy place with a lot of crazy things going on and thanks to Jeff Gliner, Samantha Bevacqua and everyone at Bowlmor, Get Real Presents got to make it a little crazier with the world’s first Beer, Bowling & Burger Festival. Your Chef NAILED my Burger menu and you’re staff is the best in the business. Thanks for letting us do our thing. To Union Beer Distributors and all the brand managers and their Beers that we poured, you made this inaugural event happen. We thank you. Man oh man, I LOVE Potato Chips and McClures has figured out how to make some of the best I have ever tasted. People loved them and your Pickles. Both Gilt City & Timeout Offers helped bring a lot of people out to the Burger Crawl and for that, I say thank you. More tasty times ahead.

Before I say thank you to everyone at 67 Burger, please allow me to publicly thank and recognize McKenzie Mahoney from the mmmguide for not only helping to organize this event but for being one of the biggest supporters of NY Burger Week out there. You are one of my favorite people to work with. People who get to participate in things like the NY Burger Week live a charmed life. Not everyone is so fortunate and it’s you that helps to remind me that helping people less fortunate is important. Everyone should spend 2 hours volunteering with McKenzie at God’s Love We Deliver. Not only does it feel good but you’ll be seriously helping people to eat better.

Onto 67 Burger! Jeff, Ed, Daphne and the rest of you, holy mackerel! I asked if you would be willing to take over the off-menu Burger Bash and you not only did a great job but you made it your own. Start working on the menu for 2014 right now because we are coming back!! I love Craft Beer and moreover, I love the people that make it. Do yourself a favor; go visit the Empire Brewery in Syracuse. The Beer is exquisite the food is wonderful and the people are the best in the business.

Watching “Burger Land” on more than a dozen huge screen TVs while bowling, drinking Beer & eating Burgers with the host of the show has got to be the next best thing to being on it. Thank you to Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn Brewery & Blue Ribbon for making TV into real life!

When I’m not out enjoying a meal at one of the 26,000 restaurants in NYC, I’m eating their Food at home thanks to delivery.com. To Johnny, Neeraj, Meghan and everyone else in the organization, especially Chris Steib, you put together one of the coolest promotions I’ve ever seen with some of the best Burger restos in NYC with your “Burger Week Delivered” initiative. Thanks to you, I get to say thank you to 5 Napkin Burger, Big Daddy’s, Bourbon Street Bar & Grille, David Burke at Bloomingdale’s, Duke’s, House of Brews, Lucky’s Famous Burgers, Mikey’s Burgers, Paul’s Da Burger Joint, Sidewalk Cafe, Black Shack, The Burger Bistro, The New York Beer Company, White Star & Whitman’s. THE CONQUEST
The Off-Menu Burger Bash is NY Burger Week’s signature event and where it all started 3 years ago at Rub BBQ at the first off menu Burger Bash. The event was a huge success and the catalyst behind me creating NY Burger Week in 2012. The off-menu Burger Bash came back with a vengeance with Rub BBQ taking their 2nd shot at feeding the Burger-crazed mouthfuls of delicious and unique burgers. It was another tasty success. Unfortunately for the Burger obsessed like me, Rub BBQ closed it’s doors forever at the end of 2012. My favorite Burger of all times ceased to exist, but the off menu Burger Bash had to live on.

Chef Jeffrey Maslanka is no joke. He and is partner in business Ed Tretter are sincerely passionate about Burgers and the restaurant biz. Eat yourself a Burg at 67 Burger or their other fresh fast food concept, Black Shack, and you’ll taste their passion. I’ve eaten at both places many times and I’ve also had their creations cooked under pressure at the NY Food & Wine Burger Bash. Every time, the Burger is a real winner. With Rub BBQ now closed it was time to pass the torch of the off menu Burger Bash and I needed a Burger team that could execute. I knew Jeff and Ed would be the right team for the task.

The Off-Menu Burger Bash is NY Burger Week’s signature event and where it all started. We’re extremely excited to be bringing this delicious event to 67 Burger in Park Slope. Chef Jeff promises to whip out some doosey Burgers including his famous “Pastrami Burger.” Grab a bud & join us for what will be an awesome Burger party.

Wash it all down with a couple of delicious, Brooklyn made Beers from Empire Brewing Company. A representative from the brewery will be on hand to take you through a Beer tasting and answer any questions you have.

  • Empire White Aphro: A Belgianized version of our popular Aphrodisiac Ale. The honey, ginger, and lavender are still added as a spice addition. It is fermented with a traditional Belgian yeast strain, and wheat malt was added, giving it a Belgian white characteristic. 5.6% ABV
  • Empire Amber: A robust english-style beer, brewed with a proportion of caramel malt and aromatic hops from the pacific northwest. 5.5% ABV

Vote for your favorite Burger at the end of the meal and whichever Burger has the most votes will become the official 67 Burger for National Hamburger Month!!

THE BURGERS
The timing, execution and serving of the event was no small task and the team at 67 Burger nailed every aspect of the event. It took a crew of 4 people to hand prepare each Burger as well as 4 people on the floor to serve them. It was like watching a beautiful dance put on by a highly affective military unit.

NY_Burger_Week_67_Burger_Off_Menu_Burger_bash_Brooklyn_Empire_Brewing_050513_5594NY_Burger_Week_67_Burger_Off_Menu_Burger_bash_Brooklyn_Empire_Brewing_050513_5597NY_Burger_Week_67_Burger_Off_Menu_Burger_bash_Brooklyn_Empire_Brewing_050513_5622

Each Burger was served 1 for every 2 people and once it hit the table, it was up to us to effectively cut them in half to share. Thankfully I had the Burger slicing expertise of Mighty Mike Fox to rely upon.

Thank you to the rest of my fellow off menu Burger Bashers. We got to enjoy some awesome, awesome Burgers brought to us by a team that was just as excited to serve us as we were to eat them. To Ed, Daphne, Jeff and the rest of the staff of 67 Burger, you not only took the off menu Burger Bash torch hand off expertly but you then ran it in for a gold medal. Outstanding service, amazing Food and tons of fun. Thank you so much. Making delicious Beer is an artform and representing it is no easy job either. Thank you to Mike, Olivia, Tim and the entire team at Empire Brewing. You set an example for the rest of the industry.
