But NYC, you love yourself some Burgers and that’s why it’s my duty to bring you the best of the best of them. I’m honored to have this role and I thank each and every one of you who participated in the most Burgerific celebration in a city that truly, truly appreciates a good time and a tasty Burger.

THANK YOUS
First and foremost, if you attended any event whether as a fan, friend or working on it, thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you and THANK YOU. I did this for you. Granted there were some tasty side benefits but by being a part of NY Burger Week, you help show the rest of the world that we love our Burgers. I tip my hat and bow to you in honor.

In order of appearance, thank you to each of you.

My wife and talented novelist, Cara Lynn Shultz. You make my every day better and if Burgers ceased to exist today, my life would go on because I would still be able to share it with you.

Taste What You See On the Screen at the Food Film Festival in NYC, Chicago and now Charleston, SC. The people that put on this festival are some of the nicest, most fun and passionate people I have met in the hospitality business. I love being a part of your family and appreciate your support of NY Burger Week. George Motz, Seth Unger and Nicole Bergman – I love you. Your support of good food & good times makes life worth working for.

Jarlsberg Cheese rules, much like the people that represent it. There’s a reason you are successful and that’s because you realize Cheese is about life, it’s about community and it’s about sharing. Thank you for sharing with NY Burger Week. Ronnie, Aja & Casey, you are three hardest working people in the biz.

Jamie Schweid! I want your job. You wake up every day and get to talk about Hamburgers and not just any Hamburgers. Burger Maker Beef is some of the best in the business and I am honored to be able to represent your delicious product. Without you, there is no NY Burger Week. Here’s to Boston, Philly, Chicago and beyond.

Marc and Rob, my partners at Idle Hands Bar, thank you not just for a super fun kick off event but helping to make a childhood dream come true. To Dan & That Burger, all the best of luck buddy. I am psyched that we were able to help you take your business to all new levels. Don’t forget the little people when you have 600 That Burger locations along the Eastern Seaboard. Don’t forget, you owe us a Bourbon Ketchup release party. To Ally from Green Flash, Billy from Ballast Point & Dan from Stone Brewing Co, that awesome. Let’s do it again.

Jessica from Heaven Hill, I am psyched we got to work together. You are Bourbon’s best rep in the big city. Andrew from Boozy Burbs & William Cho from Hudson 303 Sport Cafe helped change the definition of “NY Burger Week” to mean not just inside the 5 Boroughs. Thank you.

Times Square is a crazy place with a lot of crazy things going on and thanks to Jeff Gliner, Samantha Bevacqua and everyone at Bowlmor, Get Real Presents got to make it a little crazier with the world’s first Beer, Bowling & Burger Festival. Your Chef NAILED my Burger menu and you’re staff is the best in the business. Thanks for letting us do our thing. To Union Beer Distributors and all the brand managers and their Beers that we poured, you made this inaugural event happen. We thank you. Man oh man, I LOVE Potato Chips and McClures has figured out how to make some of the best I have ever tasted. People loved them and your Pickles. Your support of Get Real and NY Burger Week is beyond appreciated. To Green Mountain Energy and the Village Voice, your undying support of Get Real Presents helps us to keep building a community of educated eaters & drinkers. Ben Trivett, thanks for making us look so good!

Both Gilt City & Timeout Offers helped bring a lot of people out to the Burger Crawl and for that, I say thank you. More tasty times ahead.

Before I say thank you to everyone at 67 Burger, please allow me to publicly thank and recognize McKenzie Mahoney from the mmmguide for not only helping to organize this event but for being one of the biggest supporters of NY Burger Week out there. You are one of my favorite people to work with. People who get to participate in things like the NY Burger Week live a charmed life. Not everyone is so fortunate and it’s you that helps to remind me that helping people less fortunate is important. Everyone should spend 2 hours volunteering with McKenzie at God’s Love We Deliver. Not only does it feel good but you’ll be seriously helping people to eat better.

Onto 67 Burger! Jeff, Ed, Daphne and the rest of you, holy mackerel! I asked if you would be willing to take over the off-menu Burger Bash and you not only did a great job but you made it your own. Start working on the menu for 2014 right now because we are coming back!! I love Craft Beer and moreover, I love the people that make it. Do yourself a favor; go visit the Empire Brewery in Syracuse. The Beer is exquisite the food is wonderful and the people are the best in the business.

THE CONQUEST
When I first tried Chef Ariel’s Burger at Hardings, I thought “this was put together by someone who passionately cares about Burgers for people who passionately care about Burgers.” That’s a real quote, I wrote it. The custom blend of 80/20 lean to fat ratio mix of Chuck and Skirt Beef which she uses arrives into the restaurant and then Ariel grinds the Beef, mixing in a 30% ratio of Short Rib. To a Food fanatic’s ears, that sounds pretty sexual and the taste of the Burger backs it up. When they asked me if they could be a part of NY Burger Week, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to share this tasty, tasty Burger with the Burgerverse.

THE BURGER
I’ve reviewed the Harding’s Burger before and worked with Harding’s to custom create this experience, so there’s no need to repeat myself or give a rating. But it was even a surprise to me, Chef Ariel recently switched the Meat supplier she uses to make changes to the Burger. The Burger is now made with Beef from Creekstone Farms from Kansas via Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors in NYC. Creekstone produces a premium quality Beef by slaughtering a very limited amount of cows. Their Cattle are never fed antibiotics, hormones, growth promoting drugs or artificial ingredients via a 100% Vegetarian diet. The farm uses only humane animal handling practices when raising said Cattle. This makes for an all natural and delicious tasting Beef product and with one bite of the Harding’s Burger, you’ll notice.

Thanks to everyone who attended and enjoyed a really fun night of food & drink education along with some delicious drinks and eats. None of this would be possible without Jessica from Heaven Hill & Whiskey Roundtable who played a big part in making it happen. Much love to everyone at Harding’s who put on an awesome display of professionalism and hospitality. You are an amazing team with a fantastic restaurant.

The most important lesson learned at this event; “Hogs don’t eat Cucumbers.”

THE CONQUEST
It’s been 602 days since Dan Petersen and That Burger took over the kitchen at Idle Hands Bar. In that time we’ve al eaten some tasty burgers paired with Iron Maiden, young adult novels, American Octoberfest Beers & even given them away for free for my birthday. We also helped Dan create, launch and sell his signature Bourbon Ketchup. It’s been a fun, tasty, burgerific ride … and now it’s over.

May 1, 201 was not only the first day of National Hamburger Month and NY Burger Week, it was also That Burger’s final day at 25 Avenue B. Because neither I nor Idle Hands Bar do anything unless it’s worth overdoing (my life motto), we sent Dan & That Burger off with a bang, a head-bang that is…

THE CONQUEST
I get asked all the time, “what is the best Burger you’ve ever eaten?” With 500 plus Burgers reviewed on this site, it shouldn’t be a surprise to know this query is very popular in conversations with me. What should surprise you, is that I do have an answer and there is a best Burger I have ever eaten and it’s at Rub BBQ in New York City.

Rub BBQ’s Monday Night Secret Burger is something I can talk about endlessly. It’s probably one of the most heralded, talked about and anticipated burgers in all the burgerverse and it’s only available on Monday nights. Every Monday, beginning at 6 pm, Rub BBQ starts serving them but doesn’t put them on the menu. You need to know to ask and while you’re at it, there is one more thing you should know. There is always more than 1 burger.

Each week Rub offers up THE “Rub Burger” which is Burger Conquest fave but they also put forth a different specialty each week. Ever since this burger ritual began more than a year ago, Rub BBQ has NEVER repeated a special burger. While I would like to tell you i’ve eaten them all, I haven’t but spend 10 minutes with owner Andrew Fischel and Chef Scott Smith and you’ll feel like you missed out on 60-70 of the most important burgers ever made.

In 2011, I worked with them to put together an Off-Menu Burger Bash, that was one of the most awesome & filling Burger events of all times. The event sold out both seatings in about an hour. People who were lucky enough to get tickets, were treated to a menu that had 5 of Rub’s Secret Monday Night Burgers along with some sides and some Boozy Milk Shakes. Well, what would Burger Conquest’s NY BURGER WEEK without including an event at Burger Conquest? Let’s not even discuss, instead let’s talk about NY Burger Week’s Grand Finale … One of the greatest New York Burger events EVER returns!

Price: $44.95

For our Second Annual Burger Bash Event, we are serving 4 off-the-menu Burgers from award winning barbeque-ists featuring:

  • The Mac-N-Cheese Burger: House Ground Burger topped with Deep Fried Mac N Cheese and Aioli
  • The Bacon Burger: House Ground Burger mixed with house made Bacon topped with Cheddar cheese and Pickled Red Onions
  • The Black and Blue Burger: House Ground Burger Blackened and topped with “Stinky” Blue Cheese
  • A North African Lamb Burger: House ground Beef and Lamb blend mixed with Moroccan Spices topped with a Pine Nut and Golden Raisin Relish

This flavor intensive feast includes:

  • Two Draft Craft Beers or Fountain Drinks (Soda, Tea or Lemonade)
  • Choice of 1 small order of Fries or Onion Strings

THE BURGERS
Rub’s process for Burger making is nothing short of intense. They house grind their own Meat and other than the Buns, they prep everything in house. They can’t just be whipped out or served quickly, they take time, hence the two hours it would take to eat my way through this epic Burger meal.

Rub BBQ started everyone with a choice of drinks including a selection from their craft beers on tap. While the first of the Burgers was hitting the flat iron, we had a choice of French Fries or Onion Rings. I went with the house cut whole Potato Fries, covered them up in a little vinegar and a “table mixed” BBQ / Ketchup.

Black and Blue Burger–  House Ground Burger coated in a Cajun Seasoning and then blackened & topped with a Valedon Spanish Blue Cheese and Remoulade. This was the juiciest, most perfectly executed Black and Blue Burger ever. The tastes happen in order of bite; first you taste the Blue Cheese, then the Cajun Spices and then the Beef. Chef Scott must be some kind of Wizard with his most impressive trick being able to make sure you can still taste the Beef in the middle of all the intense flavors surrounding it.

9 out of 10 Ounces

Fried Mac-N-Cheese Burger: House Ground Burger topped with home made Deep Fried Mac N Cheese and a Roasted Garlic Aioli on a Buttered Toasted Bun. Is there anything Rub BBQ can make that isn’t perfect? Not even if they were trying. Again, another perfectly cooked Beef Patty and this time topped with something that could’ve been served as it’s own dish! Mac n Cheese is awesome. When it’s deep fried, which is totally unnecessary, it makes it even more amazing. The Garlic Aioli gives a nice tangy taste to each bite and along with the juiciness of the Meat, keep it from being dry.

9 out of 10 Ounces

North African Lamb Burger: A blended Patty made from a Beef & Lamb mixed with Moroccan La Kama Spices topped with a Pine Nut, Golden Raisin and preserved Lemon Relish and a Mint Yogurt Sauce. The amount of creativity, time and execution that went into this Burger were well worth it. The North African Lamb Burger is absolutely amazing. The Relish makes all the difference here in pulling together this array of unique flavors.

8 out of 10 Ounces

Cheddar Bacon Burger: House Ground Burger mixed with ground house made, tripled smoked Bacon topped with vintage English Cheddar cheese and a Whole Grain Mustard. At this point in the meal, there was no room left in my stomach. I was filled to the brim with tasty Burgerness. BUT THAT WOULDN’T STOP ME FROM EATING THIS BURGER! In fact, World War Z could erupt and I wouldn’t make a move to evacuate NYC if this was sitting in front of me. In fact, this Burger is so fiercly packed with flavor that it might be used as a weapon to ward off the living dead. Did this need a Cheese as strong as the English Cheddar? No. Was it mandatory to add a robust Whole Grain Mustard? Not really. In fact, the Rub Burger Patty is so good that it doesn’t need the Bacon. But you know what? It wouldn’t be Rub BBQ without crossing the line of Burgery Greatness.

Truly one of the most delicious and awesome Burger events out there in the Burgerverse. It was an awesome and appropriate grand finale to NY Burger Week. Do not miss out on the 3rd Annual Off-Menu Burger Bash at Rub BBQ in 2013. Hopefully again, during NY Burger Week.
