Andrew Zurica and his Hard Times Sundaes Burger Truck will team up with NY Distilling Company (405 Leonard Street, Brooklyn), The Gotham Burger Social Club and Schweid & Sons to raise money for New York Bully Crew rescue organization as part of the 4th Annual NY Burger Week. On Saturday, May 2, Zurica will pull up the Hard Times Sundaes truck in front of NY Distilling and give out 200 Burgers for free. Cash donations — in any amount — will be accepted, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the New York Bully Crew rescue organization. While you’re enjoying one of Zurica’s signature juicy Burgers — made with The Prime Burger (100% USDA Prime Chuck) by Schweid & Sons — you’ll be invited into The Shanty, NY Distilling Company’s on-site bar, where you can buy a drink made with one of their locally made and unique spirits.

New York Bully Crew is a 501c3 not-for-profit rescue organization founded in December 2010. Though based on Long Island, NYBC’s outreach is nationwide. We specialize in rescuing Pitbulls, however no animal in dire need of rescue is turned away.

The 4th of May to most is just another day or the day before Cinco De Mayo but to many others, it’s a very special day. May 4th is Star Wars day. May the 4th Be With You as you celebrate your inner Burger nerd with Schweid & Sons at Pounds & Ounces (160 8th Ave) on May 4th for the 4th Annual NY Burger Week. Pounds & Ounces, for this day only, will transform into the Mos Eisley Cantina by serving an entire menu made up of Star Wars themed food including 5 off-menu Burgers including the Kobe-Wan Wagyu Burger featuring The Katana Blend from Schweid & Sons. While you’re enjoying your Star Wars themed Burger, you’ll be sure to try some of the drinks from a special Star Wars themed cocktail menu. A Bantha Burger (not actually made from Bantha) was made to be eaten while drinking Dark & Storm Troopery, but that’s obvious.

GENUINE Superette (191 Grand St) will host a Burger tasting that will blind you with awesomeness on Tuesday, May 5th for the 4th annual NY Burger Week. We’ll team up with Burgerator, an app that helps you find, rate & share the best Burgers, to host the ultimate blind taste testing. You’ll be served 3 mini Burgers, 1 of which is on the menu at GENUINE Superette and the other 2 will be off-menu creations by Chef Brad Farmerie.

THE CONQUEST
Bourbon. Beer. Rock. That’s what we do at Idle Hands Bar and one of our signature events is pairing Rock and Roll music with Beer and Food. Whether it’s our annual Beastie Boys NY Beer Pairing (Put July 16, 2014 in your calendar now) or past Burger Week events featuring Burger and Beer pairings with Iron Maiden or Guns N Roses, we really think it’s fun to drink Beer and eat while listening to good tunes. Seeing that everyone we have ever done has sold out, it seems you do too. When it came to planning for our annual NY Burger Week Burger and Beer pairing I racked my brain trying to think of which band would be perfect to do this with. Upon some investigation I learned that this week was the anniversary of AC/DC recording Back In Black at Electric Lady studios in NYC. When I realized we could call the event “Back In Black Angus,” the decision was made.

The 2014 Burger Week in NY returns to Idle Hands Bar (25 Avenue B) on May 6th with another installment of their rock ‘n’ roll burger and beer pairing dinners. The event is called the “AC/DC Back In Black Angus Burger and Beer Pairing.” The menu will feature Burgers and beers “expertly paired” with each track on AC/DC’s Back in Black album by The Burger Week founder, Rev Ciancio. The album, originally released in 1980, has gone on to become the 4th highest selling album of all time.

On the anniversary of its recording in New York at Electric Lady Studios, attendees will enjoy a selection of off-menu mini-burgers created by Chef Dennis Hatzinger, each themed with a different song on the album. All Burgers will be made using Burger Maker’s Fresh Certified Angus Beef USDA Prime. FYI – Less than 1% of beef is considered CAB® USDA Prime worthy, so get ready for the good stuff. Burgers will be served with a series of craft beers from Bell’s Brewery, Two Brothers, 21st Amendment and Singlecut Beersmiths. The dinner will also include an order of Tater Tots & a shot of Whiskey.

THE BURGERS & BEERS
When I asked Chef Dennis if he could handle this event, he practically laughed at me. That meant he was up for the challenge. When he sent me the menu (see below), my eyes practically popped out of my head. Dennis not only was going to make it happen, he was going to own it. The way the event works, we hit play on the album and as each song comes blaring through the speakers, you get served the item paired with that song. It is expected that you keep pace with the servings. Meaning if the song is only 3 minutes, we expect you to drink your Beer / eat your Burger in 3 minutes. It’s super fast paced, really loud and a lot of fun.

Thank you for coming to Idle Hands tonight for a unique version of our weekly beer tasting event. As part of our annual NY Burger Week event, we celebrate the recording of AC/DC’s “Back In Black” album with a special burger and beer pairing. All 10 songs on the record will be paired with a Burger, Beer, Whiskey or Tater Tots. All the meat featured in the burgers tonight is fresh ground Certified Angus Beef USDA Prime from Burger Maker. Only 1% of the cattle in America qualify as CAB USDA Prime. It has strong and intense all natural beef flavors and we thought it was the only meat that could match the intensity of rock and roll we’ll be enjoying tonight.

Beer: Bell’s Black Note
Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 10.5%
Description: Black Note blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout. The combination is aged in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months.
Track: “Hell’s Bells”
Pairing: The first tolling of the bell in “Hells Bells,” sets the tone for the rock n roll intensity that became the 4th highest selling album of all times. This rare and intense stout from Bell’s should do the same.

Beer: Bell’s Two Hearted Ale
Style: IPA
ABV: 7%
Description: India Pale Ale style well suited for Hemingway-esque trips to the Upper Peninsula. American malts and enormous hop additions give this beer a crisp finish and incredible floral hop aroma.
Track: “Shoot To Thrill”
Pairing: Two Hearted Ale is a gold standard IPA. One sip and it gets under your skin. Get your taste buds ready and enjoy at will.

Burger: Honey Glazed Burger, Crispy Prosciutto & Aged White Cheddar
Track: “What You Do For Money Honey”
Pairing: Honey, what do you do for burgers? You’ll be spending a night in queue for this Burger.

Beer: Two Brothers Dog Days
Style: Dortmunder/Helles
ABV: 4.9%
Description: Brewed in the style of Dortmund, Germany, this golden lager has a delicate caramel malt character, balanced by a light body and mild German noble hops, creating a crisp, refreshing finish.
Track: “Givin The Dog A Bone”
Pairing: Angus & Malcom Young – two brothers that redefined Rock N Roll. Jim & Jason Ebel,- two brothers that redefined European style brewing in America. See what we did there?

Beer: 21st Amendment Back In Black
Style: Black IPA
ABV: 6.8%
Description: Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.
Track: “Let Me Put My Love Into You”
Pairing: How do we possibly have this event and not serve this beer? They question you should ask is why this song? Because Chef Dennis wanted to pair a Burger with “Back In Black.” Save a sip for what’s coming next.

Pairing: Let loose from the noose because this Burger will be getting you high on the savory and spicy flavors. It’s Outta sight.

Beer: Singlecut Bon TNTPA
Style: Pale Ale
ABV: 5.2%
Description: If you want hops, you got it! Oi! So you want to get kicked in the teeth with a lupulin kick that’s all from Down Under? (Well OK, maybe some New Zealand in there too). This is a whole lotta dry-hopped powder keg in a sessionable package and only for you problem childs out there.
Track: “You Shook Me All Night Long
Pairing: If a brewery is going to make an AC/DC themed beer, we’ll make sure we have it for an AC/DC Beer pairing.

Whiskey: Jameson Irish Whiskey
Style: Porter
Proof: 80
Description: A pot still whiskey with a delicate grain whiskey, infuse them with the nuttiness of our sherry casks and balance the flavours with the fragrant vanilla of our bourbon casks. Pairing: If you’re gonna pair 1 of the greatest rock n roll songs of all times with a potato, why not the best potato product of all times?

Man oh man. This is a really, really, really tough event to make happen. 10 courses in 49 minutes is not only hard to serve, it’s hard to eat / drink!! It took a team of 4 of us just to serve 20 people! But honestly, the mayhem and chaos is all worth it because of how much fun it is to produce it.

Thanks. I mean really, that’s the one word I want to get across here. Thanks. To everyone who bought a ticket and came to the party, thank you. I don’t have to say “I hope you had a good time” because I know you did, especially the group of ladies who decided to sit through the second seating just because they wanted to listen to more AC/DC. Every single person that came was super nice and a lot of fun to serve. Thanks goes to Sean from Two Brothers, Nick & Brian from Singlecut, Susanne from 21st Amendment, Zalika from Manhattan Distributors, Matt from Union Distributors and Yvon from Bell’s Brewing. Each one of these people not only showed up to the event day of to pour you their Beer and talk about it but they also made sure we were able to get the special Beers we poured during the tasting. Only 14 kegs of Two Brothers Dog Days came into NYC, only 1 keg of Singlecut Bon TNTPA was available, only 40 cases of Bell’s Black Note came into the state of NY. You guys were treated to some very special, small batch and unique Craft Beers. Thank you to Chef Dennis, Chris P & Chris T from Idle Hands Bar. It’s a pleasure to work with you guys and I appreciate how dedicated you were to making this a smooth and fun event. To Dennis, man, it’s been a pleasure working with you for the last year. Your Food is excellent and your dedication to cooking perfect Hamburgers is like no other. You took the Food at Idle Hands to another level and I have been extremely proud of the Burgers we’ve served, especially on this, your final night at the bar. To Rob and Marc, my partners at Idle Hands Bar, you guys are way more than just that to me and I’m super proud of what we are able to do there. This event was super fun and I appreciate you letting me get away with putting us in legal jeopardy. Ha ha ha

THE CONQUEST
“What can we do that’s different?” That’s how the conversation started when I sat down with Harry & Kenny from The Bar Room. Their excitement and desire to be a part of NY Burger Week was infectious. The Bar Room is brightly lit (thanks to an awesome skylight), upscale bar with a small dining room, interesting cocktails, a selection of Craft Beers and a short menu of really nice upscale Pub Fare. It’s not really a Burger joint per se, but they do regularly feature a Burger made with Burger Maker’s Steakburger, topped with Vermont Cheddar Cheese, sliced Pickles, melted Onions, and housemade Aioli. If you want to know more about, please check out the review on BurgerWeeky. But what they don’t have is a Mexican themed menu…until now.

To celebrate Cinco De Mayo, The Burger Week has teamed up with The Bar Room (117 E. 60th St) for a Mexican-themed Burger feast. On May 5, you’ll be treated to a special pre-fixe dinner designed by The Bar Room Chef Kenny Brand. The event includes a 5-course Mexican themed dinner with 3 Dishes and 2 Cocktails, including a Beer Cocktail made with Dos Equis. The star of the show will be a Mexican-spiced Burger Patty topped with Aged Cheddar, Grilled Tomato, Fresh-made Pico de Gallo and a side of Nachos (replacing the standard French Fries). The Burger will be made with Burger Maker’s fresh “Certified Angus Beef Steakburger” which includes only fresh Certified Angus Beef trimming that are upper two-thirds USDA Choice.

THE BURGER:
Seeing as how the event was going to fall on Cinco De Mayo, a date that is observed in the US as a celebration of appreciation to Mexico in warding off would-be French support for the Confederate States of America in the Civil War, it only seemed to make sense that we theme it around the day. When I suggested it to Harry & Kenny from The Bar Room a resounding and excited approval came right back at me. They went to work and came up with a pretty awesome pre-fixe menu centered around a Mexican-themed Burger. Like the event poster says, I don’t normally eat Mexican Burgers, but when I do, it’s during NY Burger Week at The Bar Room.

Jalapeño Poppers from scratch with a Smoked Pepper Dipping Sauce, stuffed with Cream Cheese, Bacon and Onion.

Paired with 1 “Ransom Buck” cocktail which consists of Tequila, Habanero Syrup, White Pepper and Ginger Beer.

Mexican themed Burger with a Spiced Patty with Aged Cheddar, Grilled Onion, Grilled Tomato, Fresh Pico de Gallo. Side of house made Nachos (instead of Fries)

Paired with 1 Beer Cocktail featuring Dos Equis served in a pint glass over ice with Fresh Lemon Juice, St. Germain and Tequila with a Lemon Twist.

If you love Hamburgers, it’s a never ending stream of delicious pictures and reviews of Burgers primarily in the New York area. I love it. He worked extra, extra, extra hard to help promote not only this event which he helped me to present, but all of NY Burger Week. Brad also ran around the city with me a couple weeks before the events and in one day taste tested 6 different Burgers. It was an EPIC day of eating and because I had a stomach bug, he had to do all of it. You are true brother of the Burgerverse and I appreciate all you do.

THE CONQUEST
There were 2 key events that lead to the creation of NY Burger Week. The first was a National Hamburger Day party I hosted in 2010 at Rare Bar & Grill. On that day, readers of this blog were invited to join myself and George Motz for a “Louis Lunch” style Burger at Rare. At the time, it was the highest attended event Burger Conquest had ever done. The following February, I teamed up with Andrew Fischel and threw an off-menu Burger Bash at Rub BBQ. The event sold out in minutes and a 2nd seating was added. It was such a huge success that we wanted to make it an annual event.

That was the birth of the signature event of Burger Week, the Burger Brunch. Six more events were created and boom, NY had it’s very own Burger Week. Sadly, later that year Rub BBQ, home to the BEST Burger I’ve ever eaten, closed it’s doors. In 2013 Chef Jeff Maslanka took over the duty and we hosted the Burger Brunch at 67 Burger in Brooklyn. In 2014, the Burger Brunch came full circle for the 3rd Annual NY Burger Week.

The Burger Week began many years ago at a boozy Burger brunch and for 2014 the tradition continues! Rare Bar & Grill (303 Lexington Ave) will host Boozed Up Burgers With a Tequila & Whiskey Tasting Brunch on Sunday, May 4th for the 3rd Annual NY Burger Week. Proprietor and Burger aficionado, Douglas Boxer, has put together a Drunken Trio of Burgers, each of which is flambeed in a different liquor. You’ll taste all three as well as Rare Bar & Grill’s delicious Sweet Potato Chips topped with a Honey Drizzle.

Along with the Drunken Trio Burgers, you’ll enjoy an expertly lead tasting of small batch Tequila and Bourbon. Returning to the Burger Week, liquor expert Jessica Partington from Heaven Hill will lead a tasting of Lunazul’s Blanco and Anejo Tequilas along with Elijah Craig 12 year Bourbon.

THE BURGERS
There’s a lot of ways you could make a Burger Brunch “boozy.” When it came to this year’s party, I thought working with Rare Bar & Grill would be fun since they have a menu of Burgers that are flambeed in different liquors. How else to make it fun? Invite the guys from Gotham Burger Social Club to join. If you follow them on instagram you’ll be privy to a never ending stream of amazing Burger porn, refreshing looking Cocktails and a lot of dudes in suits. It’s definitely one of the classiest Burger clubs out there.

Jameson Black Barrel Burger – Fresh ground ribeye, flambéed in Jameson Black Barrel select reserve atop its aged whiskey slaw & smothered with white Irish cheddar.

T-Bone Burger – A blend of filet and strip, flambeed in tequila, wrapped in apple smoked bacon, topped with cheddar and crispy onions.

M&M Burger – Our classic flambéed in whiskey topped with caramelized shallots, cheddar cheese & smoked apple bacon.

We had so much fun with the Bourbon Tasting event during the 2nd Annual NY Burger Week at Hardings with “Bourbon Jess” Partington from Heaven Hill, that I asked her to come back and be a part of Burger Week again. As this event was the day after the Kentucky Derby and the day before Cinco De Mayo, Jessica suggested we do a tasting of both a Bourbon and a Tequila. It was a good call because both of them were very delicious. Jessica is an expert on these spirits and gave everyone a little lesson about their history and how to “properly” taste them.

Thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed the Boozy Burger Brunch. Events like this are not easy to do and pretty stressful on a kitchen. You guys were super patient and really fun to serve. You made this a great event. Thank you very much to Doug, Katie, Sergio, Eddie, Jess and everyone else at Rare Bar & Grill. They were the very first restaurant to reach out and ask to be a part of the 3rd Annual NY Burger Week. Thank you to the Gotham Burger Social Club. THE CONQUEST
Who eats 10 Burgers in one day? Last year during the 2nd Annual Amstel Light NY Burger Crawl you did! New York City however is not to be outdone and this year for the 3rd annual you ate 14 BURGERS IN ONE DAY!!!! We had so much fun in 2013 that I knew we had to bring the event back and make it even bigger. Thanks to Amstel Light, the official Beer of the Burger, we were able to make it happen again. Amstel Light is the Beer that Beer drinkers drink when they’re having a light Beer … with a Burger. Amstel Light is made with only 4 ingredients; Water, Hops, Yeast & Malted Barley. It comes from a brewing tradition that dates back to 1870 in Amsterdam. It’s a perfect Beer to have when you are having 14 of them at 14 different NYC bars with 14 different Burgers.

This year’s Burger Crawl was made even more special as it was a fund raiser for Autism Speaks. Their goal is to change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. I’m really proud of what we were able to accomplish together in raising money for Autism Speaks. A big thank you goes to Amstel Light and the Heineken family. They are the ones that make this possible. Coordinating with 14 bars is a lot of work and they helped to facilitate that task. The biggest of thank you’s goes to all of the bars who participated. I appreciate all that you did to help promote the event and the great customer service you showed everyone who was out on the crawl. You guys are the stars of the show and your dedication to serving good Beer and Burgers to the people is outstanding. Thank you to the Burger Lift and Burgeator teams. Hopefully you got a chance to spend a few minutes with them and see how they are working to improve the Burgerverse. A sincere tip of the hat goes to the entire staff of Idle Hands Bar, especially Chef Dennis Hatziner, who cooked up a whopping 480 ounces of Ground Beef just during the crawl. You guys all worked very hard to make the first stop on the crawl a fun and tasty place to be. From gourmet blends to off-menu specialities, to beer pairings, NY Burger Week will pay tribute to the world’s greatest sandwich, the Hamburger. Each restaurateur and Chef will be preparing a unique event that pays tribute to the Burger in their own way.

THE CONQUEST
When 5 friends went out for a burger at Arthur’s Steakhouse in Hoboken, NJ on Friday, October 16, 2008, none of them, especially me, envisioned a blog that would last this long, let alone launching and running consecutive Burger Weeks in NY was in the cards. But NYC, you love yourself some Burgers and that’s why it’s my duty to bring you the best of the best of them. I’m honored to have this role and I thank each and every one of you who participated in the most Burgerific celebration in a city that truly, truly appreciates a good time and a tasty Burger.

First and foremost, if you attended any event whether as a fan, friend or working on it, thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you and THANK YOU. I did this for you. Granted there were some tasty side benefits but by being a part of NY Burger Week, you help show the rest of the world that we love our Burgers. I tip my hat and bow to you in honor.

Taste What You See On the Screen at the Food Film Festival in NYC, Chicago and now Charleston, SC. Andrew from Boozy Burbs & William Cho from Hudson 303 Sport Cafe helped change the definition of “NY Burger Week” to mean not just inside the 5 Boroughs. Thank you.

Times Square is a crazy place with a lot of crazy things going on and thanks to Jeff Gliner, Samantha Bevacqua and everyone at Bowlmor, Get Real Presents got to make it a little crazier with the world’s first Beer, Bowling & Burger Festival. Your Chef NAILED my Burger menu and you’re staff is the best in the business. Thanks for letting us do our thing. To Union Beer Distributors and all the brand managers and their Beers that we poured, you made this inaugural event happen. We thank you. Man oh man, I LOVE Potato Chips and McClures has figured out how to make some of the best I have ever tasted. People loved them and your Pickles. Your support of Get Real and NY Burger Week is beyond appreciated. To Green Mountain Energy and the Village Voice, your undying support of Get Real Presents helps us to keep building a community of educated eaters & drinkers. Ben Trivett, thanks for making us look so good!

Ashley Healey, you are my new best bud. Thank you for having the foresight, drive and tenacity to make not only our partnership work but being the real brawn behind the 2nd annual NY Burger Crawl. Amstel Light is not only the official Beer of the Burger but now can claim to be the official Beer of the NY Burger Crawl.

There’s a lot of bars in the city but only 10 of them who supported your Burger & Beer needs. When are you looking for a bar in Murray Hill or Kips Bay, be sure to check out: Desmond’s Tavern, Mad Hatter Saloon, Manhattan Brewhouse, Mason Jar, Murray Bar 34, Nelly Spillanes, Rodeo Bar, Slattery’s Midtown Pub, The Churchill, Van Diemen’s.

Both Gilt City & Timeout Offers helped bring a lot of people out to the Burger Crawl and for that, I say thank you. More tasty times ahead.

Before I say thank you to everyone at 67 Burger, please allow me to publicly thank and recognize McKenzie Mahoney from the mmmguide for not only helping to organize this event but for being one of the biggest supporters of NY Burger Week out there. You are one of my favorite people to work with. People who get to participate in things like the NY Burger Week live a charmed life. Not everyone is so fortunate and it’s you that helps to remind me that helping people less fortunate is important. Everyone should spend 2 hours volunteering with McKenzie at God’s Love We Deliver. Not only does it feel good but you’ll be seriously helping people to eat better.

Onto 67 Burger! Jeff, Ed, Daphne and the rest of you, holy mackerel! I asked if you would be willing to take over the off-menu Burger Bash and you not only did a great job but you made it your own. Start working on the menu for 2014 right now because we are coming back!! I love Craft Beer and moreover, I love the people that make it. Do yourself a favor; go visit the Empire Brewery in Syracuse. The Beer is exquisite the food is wonderful and the people are the best in the business.

Watching “Burger Land” on more than a dozen huge screen TVs while bowling, drinking Beer & eating Burgers with the host of the show has got to be the next best thing to being on it. Thank you to Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn Brewery & Blue Ribbon for making TV into real life!

I’m still over the moon from the 5 Burgers from 5 Animals paired with 5 Beers from 5 Breweries we had the Alewife’s Beer Burger Conquest dinner. Thank you to Patrick, Roz, Travis, Gregorio and everyone there for setting the bar at the highest level for future NY Burger Week events.

When I’m not out enjoying a meal at one of the 26,000 restaurants in NYC, I’m eating their Food at home thanks to delivery.com. To Johnny, Neeraj, Meghan and everyone else in the organization, especially Chris Steib, you put together one of the coolest promotions I’ve ever seen with some of the best Burger restos in NYC with your “Burger Week Delivered” initiative. Thanks to you, I get to say thank you to 5 Napkin Burger, Big Daddy’s, Bourbon Street Bar & Grille, David Burke at Bloomingdale’s, Duke’s, House of Brews, Lucky’s Famous Burgers, Mikey’s Burgers, Paul’s Da Burger Joint, Sidewalk Cafe, Black Shack, The Burger Bistro, The New York Beer Company, White Star & Whitman’s. The Burgers that each of you created were magnificent and bold.
